Herman’s Hideaway

Hermans Hideaway 08

Challenge

Herman’s Hideaway, a longstanding fixture of the Denver live-music scene, had just passed from its founder to his son, who was refreshing the venue and wanted the building itself to signal the change. The brief was open-ended: something impactful enough to make people take notice.

Approach

The starting point was the one fact that mattered most: live music was the entire identity of the business. That pointed to a vintage Shure Super55 microphone as the visual anchor, chosen for its instantly recognizable silhouette. Around it, the design extended the feeling of being inside the venue out onto the exterior wall: a purple-to-blue gradient, painted spotlight beams, and light circles meant to read like stage lighting at night. The venue name was set in large block lettering integrated with the existing marquee/awning structure rather than fighting it.

Result

A full-facade mural — an oversized Shure Super55 microphone graphic, “HERMAN’S HIDEAWAY” in bold white block lettering, and a stage-lit purple/blue treatment across the wall, incorporating the building’s existing awning structure into the composition. The mural gave the venue a distinct, immediately recognizable exterior that reads as “live music” from the street.
